On March 25, 2025, the Department of Long-Term Care at Asia University held a career lecture titled “Older Adults: Eat Enough, Drink Enough, Get Enough Nutrition!” in Room M406. Assistant Professor Chang Szu-Lan was invited to introduce key principles of nutrition for older adults. She explained that reduced appetite in seniors is often linked to dental problems, swallowing difficulties, declines in smell and taste, and the effects of chronic diseases. The goal is not simply bland eating, but rather eating small, frequent meals, increasing protein and nutrient density, and adjusting food texture to match individual abilities so that seniors can truly “eat enough.”

She also noted that many older adults drink too little water because their sense of thirst decreases or they worry about frequent urination, which can raise the risks of constipation, infection, and falls. She recommended drinking small amounts at regular times, using warm water or light soups to help seniors “drink enough.” The lecture reminded students that senior nutrition is an issue every family and society will face; with better understanding and small daily adjustments, we can make a meaningful difference in older adults’ health.
